GNSS Basics for Beginners in Drone Mapping

GNSS Basics for Beginners in Drone Mapping

GNSS Basics for Beginners in Drone Mapping    I think it is fair to assume that a significant number of drone owners have very little grasp of the importance of, and the role that Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are playing in assisted flight and automated navigation. The reliability of orientation sensors, GNSS, powerful computers and software make it just so easy to launch and fly that one can understand why drone enthusiasm is thriving despite often very superficial knowledge levels of what it takes technically to enjoy the ease…

Micro Aerial Projects third World Bank Conference

Micro Aerial Projects third World Bank Conference

Micro Aerial Projects third World Bank Conference Three years ago (2013), Micro Aerial Projects L.L.C. first attended the World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty giving a paper with Dr. Grenville Barnes of the University of Florida and Kevin Barthel of the Land Alliance titled “Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to democratize spatial data production: Towards Spatially Enabling Land Administration”. After this presentation, Micro Aerial Projects L.L.C. was contracted by the World Bank for our expertise in the use of UAS and in Land Surveying to test the usefulness and effectiveness…

SNEAK PREVIEW OF A NEW SPECIES RECENTLY SIGHTED IN THE AMERICAN SKIES

A new species recently sighted in the American skies… Name: Bateleur (belongs to the Pixhawk family) Color: White with yellow wingtips, distinctive black spot on chest Habitat: Over fields, farms and towns anywhere on the North American Continent Flight Characteristics: Flies automatically in straight lines and graceful circles Call: Faint humming with occasional beeps Habits: Effortlessly flies for up to 40 minutes with 650g of prey before landing on any ground surface Other characteristics: Sharp eyes, hardy, intelligent, easily tamed and trained for multitude of tasks First sighted in the US by…

Virtual Surveyor Tools

Virtual Surveyor Tools

What to do with those millions of triangles defining the geometry of an Urban Environment? Enter the Virtual Surveyor Tools. An all too often underestimated step in the workflow of a UAV mapping operation is the extraction of features of interest in vector format. Structure from Motion and Lidar give us unprecedented density in point clouds to better represent the shapes we are interested in. While that density helps to define edges and planes accurately, it comes with the big data burdens – heavy processing, lots of memory and patience…

Mapping Urban Areas with UAVs

Mapping Urban Areas with UAVs

In case you missed our presentation on Mapping Urban Areas with UAVs at the annual meeting of the Florida Region ASPRS (American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) last Friday, August 15th 2014, here is your opportunity to see it! The presentation covers some of our work in Albania where we used a SteadiDrone QU4D equipped with our V-map Dual Frequency GPS receiver for cadastral mapping of a highly populated urban environment where rapid development is occuring, often without proper documentation of property boundaries and ownership. The imagery was processed…

Project Albania

Project Albania

We are back in Albania, working on a project again with the World Bank.  We are using Vertical Take-off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones) to provide high resolution aerial mapping of rapidly developing areas.  In some cases land rights have not quite been legally established and in others the hard copy paper cadaster maps (which have not yet been digitized) are damaged from handling and need improvements. The use of UAVs such as this provides a cost effective way to capture the reality of the situation with high resolution…

Micro Aerial Projects presents at the World Bank Annual Conference on Land and Poverty

Micro Aerial Projects presents at the World Bank Annual Conference on Land and Poverty

At the Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty Micro Aerial Projects presented the aerial mapping work we have done in Albania using small UAVs for improved land governance and cadastral mapping.  Hopefully our work will demonstrate that small UAVs/drones are efficient and appropriate survey tools which can tackle the vast amount of mapping needing to be done in a more affordable manner. This is a highly efficient means of mapping and modelling to improve existing spatial data quality and property records! (Left: Oliver and Walter Volkmann, the V-team…
